Project Overview:

The Lighthouse aims to impart dignity and value to our guests, treating them with warmth and kindness. Beyond any practical help they may receive whilst at The Lighthouse, we aim to let people know they are ‘seen’ and valued, that their story is important to us. The Chat & Support Team is often one of the first experiences of The Lighthouse, as people arrive (often with trepidation, insecurity, or uncertainty) to seek support and help. This team provides a listening ear, supporting and signposting guests, usually over a cup of tea or coffee. Making space for people to share openly, giving them support and encouragement, and most of all listening to their stories in a non-judgemental way.

Role Description:

Flexible team to serve across different areas on the ground floor, hosting and signposting guests as they come into the Lighthouse. (For in depth 1:1 conversation, we generally recommend female volunteers to talk with female guests and vice versa).

Key Skills:

  • Friendly and hospitable

  • Good listener

  • Calm and approachable

  • Non-judgemental, able to treat everyone with equal dignity

  • Confident in communicating with people from all walks of life

  • Ability to discern when there is an issue that requires signposting or safeguarding support

Days Available:

Wednesdays - 10.15am – 12.45pm

Hours Needed:

Team prayer is 10am (optional), with a team meeting at 10:15. Guests arrive between 10:30 and 12:30, and we then hold a short team debrief from 12:30-12:40

Lighthouses are physical spaces of varying sizes in local communities, filled with kindness, belief, and hope. They are living expressions of love in action, vibrant hubs that host a range of creative projects to support, encourage, and empower those who find themselves on the margins. The Lighthouse is founded on and driven by its Christian values and ethos, as it seeks to express the love of God in action.  We welcome volunteers of all faiths and none. The Lighthouse is part of the Emmaus Transformation Trust, charity no. 1069902.
